Helping #4
When People Try to Help You,
or When They Don't...

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

The symptoms of your depression can make it harder to get along with people who care about you.  No matter what anyone says or does - you may feel unloved.  This is a symptom of depression.

Judging, anger, blaming, feeling alienated, feeling they don't care and don't understand - all your symptoms.

Get some B-vitamins as soon as  you can - it will jump start your recovery and help you accept help, and to go forward and help yourself.

Many depressed feel alienated

actually push people away

angry, expecting too much from people

--------------------

The way you feel is not their fault

It is not their fault you have depression

It is not their fault if you die

Try to catch yourself blaming, hating, it only adds fuel to your funeral pyre.

--------------------

Depression is painful to others as well

they are afraid of upsetting you and don't know if they will ever see you again

they want to help so badly but don't have a clue as to how

and they are afraid of saying or doing something wrong and causing you to kill yourself

--------------------

Anger is often tied in with other symptoms

Becoming angry will not help you

Don't expect them to understand

They don't know how you feel

If they want to try to help you, let them help.

--------------------

Borrowing their will

Think of what someone might do that would help you and offer possible choices.

Tell them what you are not doing for yourself that you should be doing.

Maybe doing some chores together could help.

Can they help you remember to take your medications or vitamins, or go with you to renew your prescriptions, buy more vitamins, or get to the doctor ?

Household chores - laundry, dishes, food shopping, cooking ?

--------------------

Think about it and make a prioritized list for them.

Try to appreciate what they can do and don't be angry for what they don't do.

Always to remember to turn it around - what would you - really - be willing or able to do for a friend or family member that you care about ?

But in the end, if it seems that no one cares, or if no one is there to help, I am asking you to turn that caring around to care for yourself.  Care for yourself as you would for a dying friend.  Give yourself the love and compassion you would give to someone you love - whether you feel like it or not.

I am asking you to do what is needed to stay alive and get treatment.  That is most important.
